Emily Elrod, M.A., LPC

Counselor

What do I do at Counseling & Psychological Services?

I am a Licensed Professional Counselor, and in my role at Counseling & Psychological Services (CAPS), I provide individual and group counseling to students struggling with childhood trauma, relational and interpersonal concerns, identity development, and family dynamic issues. I received my Master’s in Professional Counseling in 2017 from LU and since then have become EDMR trained in order to help my clients process trauma and negative beliefs more effectively. I am actively working towards EMDR certification as well.

I also co-lead a group called Schema Exploration, which is geared towards exploring ingrained beliefs about the self that affect how we relate to others and form unhealthy patterns.

What’s it like to work with me?

My main goal in counseling is to help each client see that you matter, and your story is important. Working with me is bound to be warm, empathetic, and likely upbeat. I enjoy connecting through laughter, while also helping you feel safe to be real and feel seen. I primarily work out of an Integrative Approach, using techniques from EMDR Therapy, IFS-Informed Therapy Types, Reality Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Emotion-Focused Therapy, and Narrative Therapy, generally with an emphasis on inner child work.

At the start of counseling, we’ll look at your story in order to identify themes or patterns to help us set goals and navigate the counseling process together. By the end of counseling, my hope is that each client has a clearer understanding and finds meaning in their story and is able to better navigate life’s experiences with more confidence and freedom.

What do I do outside of Counseling & Psychological Services?

Outside of CAPS, I enjoy spending time with my husband, our 3 sons, and our 2 dogs. We spend most evenings outside together playing any sport you can think of, throwing the Frisbee, or going for walks and bike rides. I enjoy monthly date nights with my husband as well as family trips to the golf course for 9 holes or to go to the driving range. I really enjoy baking and am always on the hunt for the perfect chocolate chip cookie recipe.  If sent on vacation, you can find me at the beach building sandcastles, going for walks on the shore, or just relaxing in the sun with my toes in the water.
